Start with the equation
2x + 5 = 17
Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides
2x + 5 = 17
-5 -5
2x = 12
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2
2x = 12
÷2 ÷2
x = 6
Answer
x = 6
Check
2(6) + 5 = 17
12 + 5 = 17
17 = 17 ✓
