Theme: Organization can help people become more successful.

The main idea is specifically about Jordan. The theme applies to everyone.

Passage: Maya practiced piano every day for two months. At first she made many mistakes, but by the recital she could play the song confidently.

Main Idea: Maya improved her piano skills through practice.

Theme: Consistent effort can lead to improvement.

A Helpful Trick

Ask yourself: Does my answer include the character’s name or only describe what happened in this story? If yes, it is probably a main idea.

Does my answer teach a lesson that could apply to many people? If yes, it is probably a theme.
